  • In Ancient Egypt, queens like Cleopatra and Nefertiti used aloe vera into their daily routine having its skin-nourishing and rejuvenating properties by increasing natural glow through it.

  • In the history of Alexander the great and Christopher Columbus also utilized aloe vera in wound and injuries healing treatment sustained by soldiers.


  • What is the anatomy of an aloe vera plant ?             

  • Leaf Structure:-  Aloe vera leaves are shaped like triangles and feel thick and juicy.The edges of the leaves are jagged like a saw. When the plant grows tall stems with yellow tube-shaped flowers and then the plant produces fruits that contain little seeds for reproduction.

  • Layers of the Leaf:-  Here’s the three layers of aloe vera plant:-

 1.Inner Gel:- Inside the leaf, there's a clear gel containing mostly water. This gel also has some helpful stuff like amino acids, vitamins, and other nutrients. It's what we use in skincare products because it's soothing and moisturizing.

2.Middle Latex Layer:-Below the gel, there's a layer called latex. It's a bit bitter and yellowish. We don't use this part much because it can be irritating to the skin, but it's sometimes used as a laxative in traditional medicine.

3.Outer thick layer:- The outer layer of the leaf is like a tough skin that protects the plant. Composed of 15–20 cells, It makes sure the inside stays safe and hydrated. This part also makes some important nutrients for the plant's growth.

Allergic reactions, primarily attributed to anthraquinones like aloin and barbaloin, may occur. It's advisable to perform a patch test on a small area or consult with a doctor before using it to avoid any side effects.

  • Internal:-  Consumption of aloe vera may lead to abdominal cramps, diarrhea, or reddish urine. In some instances, hepatitis or exacerbation of constipation may occur. High amounts of aloe vera consumption has been associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Laxative effects may result in electrolyte imbalances, particularly low potassium levels. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before using it as a juice while taking aloe vera in internal cases.

  • Individuals with known allergies to plants in the Liliaceae family like (It includes ornamental plants such as lilies, tulips, medicinal plants, e.g. Aloe vera, Colchicum, etc. Vegetables like onion, garlic, asparagus also belong to the Liliaceae family) should avoid the use of aloe vera.
